Moving Company Red Flags

A warning sign does not prove fraud, but it should trigger more questions and verification. Slow down when the company identity, authority, documents, or pricing cannot be clearly explained.

Identity and licensing concerns

TxDMV identifies generic contact information, missing local business details, and inability to provide a verifiable TxDMV certificate number as warning signs for Texas moves.

  • The company answers only as Movers or Moving Company
  • Business names differ across the website, quote, payment request, and truck
  • The certificate or U.S. DOT number cannot be verified
  • The truck lacks expected company identification

Pricing and document concerns

Be cautious with unusually low offers, pressure to sign before reading, or refusal to provide proposal and contract documents. TxDMV warns that unlicensed movers may advertise a low amount and then increase the price after loading.

  • Vague inventory or service scope
  • Blank or incomplete documents
  • Pressure to pay before questions are answered
  • Unexplained changes after goods are loaded

Interstate move checks

FMCSA's Protect Your Move resources explain common moving-fraud patterns and provide a database for registered interstate movers. Verify whether the business is a carrier or broker and whether the identity matches your paperwork.

Official resources

Government databases are the authoritative source for current registration and licensing information.
