INTERSTATE MOVES

Interstate Mover Verification Checklist

An interstate move crosses state lines and requires a different verification path from a move entirely within Texas. Use FMCSA's official resources and confirm that the business described to you is the business shown in the federal database.

Search the federal mover database

FMCSA says interstate movers must be registered with the federal government and have a U.S. DOT number. Search the company and review registration status, location, contact information, business type, complaint information, and safety information.

  • Legal and trade names
  • U.S. DOT number
  • Carrier or broker classification
  • Registration and contact details

Match the search result to your documents

The company name, number, address, and role should make sense across the estimate, contract, website, and payment instructions. Ask for a written explanation before proceeding when they do not.

  • Who physically transports the goods?
  • Who receives payment?
  • Which company handles claims?
  • Is another carrier expected to participate?

Keep a complete move file

Save estimates, inventories, contracts, emails, receipts, photographs, and records of material changes. FMCSA provides complaint and problem-resolution resources if an interstate move goes wrong.
